Tucson, AZ- On March 18, for one night only, AR Flamenco presents Semillas Flamencas, an evening of flamenco under the Sonoran sky. Semillas Flamencas marks the reunion of four of Arizona’s most acclaimed flamenco artists, sharing the same stage for the first time since before the pandemic: Misael Barraza, known for his ferocious dynamics on the flamenco guitar; Jason Martinez laying down complex rhythms on the cajon; Angelina Ramirez brings her signature playful footwork patterns and tenacious stage wit; and Oliva Rojas ignites the night air with her transcending vocal range. Opening the evening, classical guitarist Ana Maria Iordache will immerse the audience in classical music’s most popular Spanish stylings.

About Angelina: Angelina Ramirez is a Tucson native and flamenco performer, teaching artists and producer. Ramirez’s artistic work explores what it means to be a queer, latina flamenca, practicing in a traditional Roma/gitano form of dance. Along with teaching and performing Ramirez produces events and festivals and is currently the curator for the Traditional and Ethnic Dance Festival with the Southwest Folklife Alliance. Ramirez is an original member of Yjastros, the American Flamenco Repertory Company and has toured with world-renowned, New York-based company Noche Flamenca. Ramirez is a 2022 Dance/USA Artist Fellow. In 2021, she received the Master-Apprentice Artist Award through Southwest Folklife Alliance for her dedication and commitment to flamenco arts. Ramirez is a National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures fellow. In 2018, she received the Arizona Commission on the Arts’ Artist Research and Development Grant to support the development of her evening-length work /SER/.
